I designed and made this costume for my second year final major project at the University of Glamorgan. It is a costume for film based on the Brother's Grimm story The Three Little Men in the Wood. Fortune is the name I gave the protagonist and this gown was made for her when the young queen is murdered. This gown was made perfect then broken down and distressed to represent Fortune's ghost after she had dragged herself from the river and walked barefoot back to the castle. Pictures of the dress before it was broken down can be seen here. click on any picture to enlarge it.
The style is loosely based on Tudor costume but is by no means historical, it is mostly a fantastical costume with elements of fashion spanning the 12th to the 18th centuries. The foundation garments, pictured below, include a chemise, a corded petticoat and tabbed stays stiffened with both steel bones and buckram. The gown and underskirt have a top layer of silk chiffon which to add to the ghostly effect, particularly when lit for film. The stomacher was embroidered entirely by hand using threads and techniques common in the 16th-18th centuries.
